Cute Little Easter Chick Cookie

Here is another Easter Cookie I made this year. I simply covered the cookie with a thin layer of royal icing using the back of a spoon. For more info on how I did this look at this post.

I used the KopyKake 300xk to outline the chick and was happy with how it turned out; however, royal icing on top of royal icing does not give the best cookie texture. The second layer generally dries too hard for my taste. I don't notice it with small accents or with 2nd layer detailing, but with this type of cookie it's a little too much royal icing for me.

Especially when working with royal icing, you don't want to cross that line where your cookie becomes like a gingerbread house - pretty to look at but not something you'd want to eat. I'm still trying hard to find that perfect middle ground.

There are a lot of beautiful designs out there but I don't even want to try to make a cookie that I wouldn't want to eat.

Fun Easter Cookies with Royal Icing

More Easter Cookies - Softer colors, next year I want to try even lighter colors.
Easiest way to outline & flood - using a cheap plastic bag! Great for simple designs. Thank you Daily Cookie - go check out her Facebook page, she is an amazing artist!
See using a plastic bag works just fine!! Now flood away!
Rainbow colored Easter Egg and Easter Bunny
Plain old polka dot eggs. I tried dots with other colors, the white is best.
New design - happy flowers! I like the wide set eyes and little mouth.
Swirly Butterflies, I never know how to decorate a butterfly.
More yellow chicks, I'm in a swirly mood.

Baa, Ram, Ewe, Baa, Ram, Ewe.
Little birds. I think swirls look great for feathers.
Happy Carrot Cookies
I hope these make someone happy!

Easter Cookies

Tray of Easter Cookies for my neighbors

The flowers look nice with the others, but look like Mother's Day to me.

I still haven't made an Easter Egg I love, the problem is I've been trying too much at once.

I didn't make too many bunnies because I thought I wouldn't like the cutter. Once I added the sanding sugar to the tail I was really happy with this one.

Carrots. Julianna added the eyeballs to the first.

Once you start adding eyeballs it's hard to stop.

These were fun, I think I put the eyeballs on upside down. Kids' favorite.

This little guy is my favorite of the day.

All of these cookies were outlined and flooded in royal icing. I will post a tutorial someday. For the little chick, I added the sanding sugar while the flood icing was wet. For the bunnies, I carefully added the sugar to the tail after that was filled in. With the flowers, I flooded and filled, and waited until the next day to outline again and add sanding sugar to the outline. I did these as a practice round and to see which cutters worked and didn't work. I wish I could just stick to one color, it is so much work to do all of this. In the end, there is something so happy about all the different colors and shapes.

I used to buy little baggies of eyeballs from cake supply stores until I realized I could just used left-over royal icing. The icing needs to be medium consistency, not too thick, but not thin, or it will run all over the parchment paper. Just pipe a white circle, then a black one on top. I do this on parchment paper, it's not too slippery but easy to remove once they have dried. If you mess up, no big deal - this is more practice with piping bags.

Lilaloa has a great post on making eyeballs. You can find that here.

Hello Kitty Easter Cookies

Hello Kitty Easter Cookies

I used the KopyKake to help make these. My icing was from a project I did yesterday and it was all falling apart making this very frustrating. I'm not happy with the Wilton meringue powder today and may need to try another brand. Any suggestions?

You can see how I made these on my St. Patrick's Day post.

Don't look to closely these are not perfect

This one was my favorite. I didn't feel like making brown so I used coral for the basket.

Easter Egg

Easter Egg

Easter Egg 2

Whenever I have icing prepared I love to try a few designs for the next big holiday. I had a whole rainbow of colors prepared, complete with a thicker outlining consistency and a more liquid filling consistency.

I wish I had a frosting mixing robot

I knew I was going to do white, pink, orange, yellow, green and blue for the baby shower cookies so I thought, why not do purple as well so I could make some princess cookies & Easter cookies as well. They would look beautiful as part of an Easter basket. I think if I did them again I would settle on a thicker icing, like this one, but to be honest, those thick icings can overtake the frosting. It's hard to find the right balance between pretty cookie and tasty cookie. With these Easter cookies I wanted both...

Think Spring

These flowers match our perfect Arizona weather in February. I like the way the chocolate resembles the earth.

Something went really wrong with the middle leaf. Oh well, it still tasted good.

I love flowers!

We got the idea for this cookie from cake central - click here to see a professional version.
The chocolate cookie recipe came from LilaLoa - yum!!!! Try it if you've never had a chocolate rolled cookie.

My Little Artist - Julianna's pretty cookies

My Little Artist Julianna

Her Spring Cookie

A Colorful Floral Arrangement

Julianna's favorites - too bad her brother kept smooshing the icing

Julianna saw that her sister was mentioned in a previous post, so to keep things equal I told her I'd post some of her work. She is my little artist and I always find her in her room creating something beautiful in her sketchpad. She picks up any craft very quickly and here are her Spring cookies - pretty impressive for a ten year old.

We took a fondant class and have been having fun experimenting. For the tiny flowers we used Wilton prepared fondant and rolled it thin with a little bit of shortening on the counter. To get it super thin we put it through the Kitchenaid KPSA pasta roller. It takes only seconds and the kids really enjoy watching how it thins the fondant out so quickly. From there, we used flower cutter plungers like these. (hmm, I spent a lot more at the cake store). I'll have to take pictures of the process. I have read blogs saying you can dry out thin sheets of fondant and use any paper punch... thats on my to-try list. I'd love to put these on cupcakes with a silver dragee. So many fun ideas and not enough parties! I learned to just use a tiny bit of fondant at a time. Here in Arizona it dries out so quickly.

This royal icing was made two days earlier and was stored in the refrigerater. I can't throw anything away so if I have extra icing I make cookies for the kids and their friends and let them have fun experimenting. If you look closely the pink icing was very runny and did not hold up.

Julianna said she wanted to sell her cookies but I told her that was against child labor laws. Now when I ask her to help around the house she reminds me that kids aren't allowed to work. Sorry Julianna, it is not against the law for kids to help their Mom clean the house.
